SMD - Surface Mounted Device is the most common technology for placing surface mount electronic devices on the PCB. In this case, a housing -the 'LED package and integrated LED chip' -is fused via a solderable contact surface with the printed circuit board. The advantages of this technology are, in particular, the smaller dimensions of the components, high efficiency, good heat dissipation and automatic assembly.

SMD LEDs are used as low and high power versions, and are available in a wide variety of colours and shapes as well as a wide variety of emission characteristics.
